LAIKO Statement on Current Events in the Philippine Political Landscape

“For the wrath of man does not accomplish the righteousness of God.” – James 1:20

The Philippines is currently engulfed in a turbulent and deeply divisive political climate, with the nation’s highest officials at the center of an escalating drama. Accusations, curses, threats of violence, detentions, and personal vendettas dominate our news and social media feeds, leaving many Filipinos disheartened and divided.

As members of the Catholic laity in a predominantly Catholic country, we cannot remain mere spectators to this unfolding crisis. We cannot stand idly by as words destroy reputations, lives are torn apart, and relationships are fractured.

We, the Laity, are called to action. We are reminded of our vital role in addressing structural sin and fostering moral integrity in the public sphere. Our mission, as articulated in Apostolicam Actuositatem, is to sanctify the world—especially in the temporal and secular realms where we live and work.

This mission compels us to engage actively in societal, political, and cultural issues, but always with Christian values as our guiding light. Our faith and morals must inform not only our private lives but also our public actions.

To neglect this responsibility is to fail in our identity as Christ’s disciples.

In this spirit, we appeal for sobriety and a return to civility. Let us strive to rise above the cycle of anger and division by reaching out in love to all parties involved in this real-life political drama. We urge everyone to seek understanding, promote reconciliation, and take responsibility for words and actions that have caused harm.

As Christ’s followers, our mission is not to deepen divisions but to be instruments of healing and unity.

Let us, as the Catholic laity, courageously fulfill our vocation to bring the light of Christ into the world—transforming conflict into peace, hatred into love, and despair into hope. Together, let us work to build a society that reflects the righteousness of God, where justice and compassion prevail over anger and discord.

Signed,

Sangguniang Laiko ng Pilipinas
