Come Together for Nature

Inspiration:  IN POPE Francis’ latest encyclical Laudato Si’, he reminds the faithful that humanity’s common home is “like a sister with whom we share our life and a beautiful mother who opens her arms to embrace us.” He also quoted from St. Francis of Assisi’s Canticle of Creatures: “Praise be to you, my Lord, through our Sister, Mother Earth, who sustains and governs us, and who produces various fruit with colored flowers and herbs.”

Philosophy : Let people immortalize themselves by planting a tree either named after themselves or by others.

Business Sense : Tree owners are encouraged to visit their trees with their family members. Their family name will be immortalized by the tree they planted or planted for them.

Eco Tourism  :  Family visits will generate visitors to the locality. As the volume of visitors rise, so does government spending on roads and private spending on tourism facilities rise.

Planting Sites:  Coordination by the local CFC Sector/Province through the Oikos coordinator with the DENR, LGU, Homeowners Association, etc. is key to have permanent (50 years) tree planting sites.

Marketing :  Tree seedlings shall be sourced from local peoples’ organization and/or the DENR. The concept will be offered to CFC members, green the earth societies, embassies and consulates, general public, etc. The wives of local officials will be encouraged to support the Own-a-Tree Project as part of their GREENING program.

Enabling Law :  Republic Act No. 10176 – Arbor Day Act of 2012

“All able-bodied citizens of the Philippines, who are at least twelve years of age, shall be required to plant one tree every year.”

This means that one has to plant 10 trees by 2021 to fulfill one’s CIVIL OBLIGATION up to and including 2021 as mandated by law.

Own-a-Tree and Help Care for Mother Earth

Mechanics of the Project:

1. For Metro Manila, the planting/growing site shall be the DENR-designated CFC Site in Brgy. Mamuyao, Tanay, Rizal which is within the Kaliwa Watershed Forest Reserve.

2. All participating groups shall be called Oikos Partners (OP). Individuals may also join by grouping themselves.

3. Site management shall be by CFC Oikos in partnership with DENR and a local Peoples’ Organization duly accredited by DENR.

4. OPs shall select the Oikos package they commit to adopt, care for and fund. They shall schedule with Oikos for annual visitations during the three years that their adopted seedlings are being nurtured. Visits may also be made thereafter.

5. Oikos shall oversee site preparation, provide required seedlings, replace dead seedlings, if any, and see to it that planting site and seedlings are properly maintained. GPS locator for planted seedlings shall be provided by Oikos.

6. Unit Cost of Adopt-a-Tree is P150 per seedling, all-in, guaranteed cared for by Oikos for three years. For example, for a planting density of 1,000 seedlings per hectare, OP donation shall be P150,000/hectare. This translates to P50,000/year for 1,000 seedlings or P50/year/seedling.

7. Not included in the cost is the transportation cost from the assembly area at the Marcos Highway junction in Brgy. Batangas to the staging area in Brgy. Mamuyao. Jeepney fare is usually P50.00 one way or P100.00 round trip per passenger. It should be noted that one has to ford the Kaliwa river three times in going to Brgy. Mamuyao from Marcos Highway junction in Brgy. Batangas. Only SUVs are recommended to ford the river for safety purposes.

8. A certificate that a number of trees have been planted showing the name of donor shall be issued by CFC Oikos.

9. An official receipt shall be issued by the CFC ANCOP Global Foundation, Inc., a duly accredited donee institution by the DSWD.
