The Carmelite Missionaries Secular (CMS) –   Philippines began as a prayer group organized by the Carmelite Missionaries during the late ’80s from among the residents of the Sacred Heart Village, Quezon City, where the CM Novitiate was located. The group was formally organized as CMS – Philippines in 1995 when the CM General Council requested for canonical recognition of the CMS to the Pontifical Council for the Laity. On March 20, 1996, the Pontifical Council for the Laity decreed the recognition of the CMS as a Private International Association of the lay faithful. CMS – Philippines became one of the many groups founded by the Carmelite Missionaries in Europe, Asia, and America.

Since then, CMS – Philippines has expanded from just one group or “Chapter” in Quezon City to 14 Chapters in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

The CMS – Philippines is organized into autonomous groups. Coordination and animation are established at the national and respective chapter levels.

At the national level, coordination is done by the National Steering Committee, composed of the National Coordinator, National Secretary, and National Treasurer. These were elected from among the coordinators from the different chapters.

The coordination of each chapter pertains to the Board of Directors which is composed of the Coordinator, Secretary, and Treasurer, and if necessary, one or two members elected by all the members of the group.

Any lay person, who wants to lead a prayerful, fraternal, and missionary life and to contribute to the extension of the Kingdom, can be a member of the CMS. The members assume the obligations laid down in the plan of life of the CMS that are determined in the Statutes and are affiliated to the Congregation of the Carmelite Missionaries. They become active members of the CMS after undergoing a process of maturation and at least two years of attending the group meetings.
