Real service fails when people ‘serve wrong masters’

Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle of Manila urged Filipinos to be “servant leaders” in their various fields of endeavor during the launch of a book titled Servant Leadership in the Light of Faith in Manila on Feb. 20.
“Even if you don’t hold any position but serve wholeheartedly you are a true leader,” said Cardinal Tagle, who added it is from “simple and ordinary people” that “we learn how it is to serve.”
The cardinal said ordinary people “have no other goal but to have a good impact in the lives of others,” adding that “failure of real service” often happens when individuals serve the “wrong masters.”
The book, which was published by the Serviam Catholic Charismatic Community Foundation, aims to create awareness and appreciation of “servant leadership.”
It features reflections and talks of various Filipino “servant leaders,” including government officials, corporate executives, and church leaders.
“What is presented in the book goes beyond the secular paradigm,” wrote Cardinal Tagle in the book’s foreword. He said a Christian’s understanding of servant leadership puts Jesus, who “did not come to be served but to serve,” at the center of one’s life.
The Serviam Catholic Charismatic Community Foundation was established in 2003 by the late Cardinal Jaime Sin of Manila and lay leader Antonio de los Reyes.
